San Diego Acupuncture: Valerie Ning Beckwith, L.Ac., Acupuncture in San Diego, CA 92130

Acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine which has been in existence for over 2500 years. It is the stimulation of certain 'acupoints' on the surface of the body that produces a physiological effect such as modifying the perception of pain. Acupuncture promotes the natural healing function of the human body. It is used to relieve pain, to strengthen the immune system, and to balance the physical and mental heath of one self.

Qi

Acupuncture, as a form of therapy, is based on the theory that one's health depends of the flow of Qi (pronounced 'chee'), or Life Energy, through a network of meridians that map the body. These meridians are pathways throughout the body that connect to all the organs and body structures. When there is an obstruction in the flow of Qi, it cuts off vital nourishment to certain parts of the body, causing pain or illness. By stimulating certain acupoints with fine needles, we can help the body accomplish a free flow of Qi through its meridians, thus promoting good health and well-being.

What to Expect

After selecting the acupoints, the practitioner will clean the skin with alcohol, then insert a sterilized disposable needle that is as thin as a hair into the acupoint. In most cases, the patient will not find it painful at all. Often times they will not feel the needle, but may experience a slight feeling of heaviness or distention. After insertion, the needles stay in place for 20-30 minutes. Most patients feel pleasantly relaxed during this time. To enhance the effect of acupuncture, the practitioner may choose to use additional modalities such as electrical stimulation, moxibustion, cupping, or infra-red heat therapy. Chinese medicinal herbs may be prescribed to support the rebalancing of acupuncture.
